The Department of Education (DepEd) continuously fulfills its mandate of creating productive and responsible learners fully equipped with 21st-century skills and competency for lifelong learners. In its recent press release, former DepEd Secretary and Vice President Sarah Z. Duterte reiterated that literacy and numeracy will be the utmost priority (DepEd Release, 2023). Further, a gap is consistently stated in the different national assessments identifying the struggles in literacy and numeracy. It further discussed that aside from heterogeneity, over 150,000 students still need foundational skills in Mathematics. Moreover, thirty percent (30%) more or 450,00 students need to have read foundational skills. The status resulted in low performance in different subjects (Igarashi et al., 2023). Additionally, Mkandawire (2022) revealed that feeble reading comprehension is one of the factors of poor achievement.
Relative to this, since implementing the K to 12 program, Bataan National High School-Senior High School has yet to identify students’ reading levels either recognition or comprehension. Beyond the school’s achievements, the result in the school’s MPS and MPL manifested an alarming stand. (BNHS SRC, 2022). For this reason, the proponent aimed to gauge the reading level of Grade 11 learners in terms of word recognition for the School Year 2023-2024 by implementing the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI) as a gauging tool. Further, after finding the reading level of the learners, the proponent utilized the Microsoft Reading Progress Tool (MRPT) through the Microsoft Team Application to address the gap manifested. The post-administration of PHIL-IRI identified the reading progress of the learners.
