The critical role of parents in the education of their children has become
increasingly significant in the context of the “new normal.” As education undergoes a transformative shift towards online modalities, parents emerge as crucial contributors to the success of their children’s learning experiences. The support rendered by parents transcends the mere provision of essential tools, such as gadgets and internet connectivity; it extends to a multifaceted role as a “learning coach.” This involvement encompasses explaining concepts, assisting with homework, coordinating extracurricular activities, communicating with teachers, and instilling effective study habits. Importantly, this research, conducted by [Author], delves into the various
dimensions of parental engagement in online learning, aiming to identify effective strategies that transcend the limitations posed by the virtual environment.
The global shift away from traditional classrooms, exacerbated by the challenges, has prompted educational institutions, including the Department of Education, to adapt swiftly. With a staggering 27.4 million enrollees for the academic year 2020-2021, the Department of Education implemented diverse learning modalities to accommodate the changing educational landscape. Among these modalities, Modular Distance Learning (MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and TV/Radio-Based Instruction have gained prominence. Approximately 6 million learners, spanning public and private schools,
have opted for online learning, signaling a significant shift in educational dynamics. However, questions loom regarding the efficacy of this transition, as educators evolve into facilitators engaging learners through various technologies accessed via the internet (DepEd – Manila Bulletin, 2020). This study critically examines the impact of online learning on parental involvement, elucidating the challenges and opportunities presented by this paradigm shift.
Amidst this educational transformation, parents find themselves shouldering the weight of distance learning, particularly in the online realm. Drawing on the insights of Francisco (2020), this research underscores the critical and apparent role parents play in the success of their children’s online learning experiences. Serving as both mentors and encouragers, parents are expected to adopt a coaching role that is constructive, goal-oriented, and aligned with the broader educational objectives. However, the reality of most parents grappling with full-time employment, financial constraints, and a lack
of resources for tutoring poses significant challenges. This study addresses the implications of these challenges on student learning outcomes and explores viable solutions to enhance the support provided by parents in the dynamic landscape of online education in public elementary schools in Balanga City.
