Enhancing Grade 8 Students’ Problem-Solving Skills through Real-life Word Problem Integration at Dangcol National High School

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the real-life word problem integration in enhancing the problem-solving skills of Grade 8 learners at Dangcol National High School through the integration of real-life mathematical word problems. Specifically, it examined learners’ problem-solving skills in terms of comprehension, computation accuracy, and logical reasoning; their attitudes and motivation toward mathematics; the frequency and types of errors encountered in solving word problems; and their perceptions of the intervention’s implementation and practicality. The study employed a quantitative action research design using a descriptive-survey approach. A total of 52 Grade 8 learners were selected through purposive sampling and participated in the implementation of the intervention. Data were gathered using a researcher-developed and validated 4-point Likert scale questionnaire and were analyzed through weighted mean and descriptive statistical techniques. The findings indicated that the intervention was Effective in improving learners’ problem-solving skills (M = 3.45), attitudes and motivation (M = 3.39), and reduction of problem-solving errors (M = 3.35). Moreover, the implementation process and practicality of the RLPWF were rated Highly Effective (M = 3.51), demonstrating its relevance, ease of use, and potential for sustained classroom implementation. The study was limited to 52 Grade 8 learners from a single public secondary school, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other educational settings. The findings provide valuable evidence for mathematics teachers, school administrators, and curriculum planners in designing practical, learner-centered interventions that improve mathematical problem-solving skills, strengthen learner motivation, and promote meaningful and contextualized mathematics instruction.
